What Is DRS in F1? (Drag Reduction System)

DRS (Drag Reduction System) opened an F1 car's rear wing to cut drag and help overtaking within one second of the car ahead. Here is how it worked.

DRS (Drag Reduction System) was a driver-controlled device in Formula 1 that opened a flap in the car’s rear wing to cut aerodynamic drag and raise straight-line speed, making overtaking easier. It was used from 2011 until the end of the 2025 season, and from 2026 the FIA replaced it with movable “active aero” wings and an electric Overtake Mode. Understanding DRS still matters, because the one-second rule it introduced carried straight over into the new system.

How did DRS work?

DRS opened a hinged flap in the upper rear wing. With that flap open the wing produced less downforce and, crucially, far less drag, so the car could reach a higher top speed on the straights. The driver pressed a button on the steering wheel to open it, and the flap snapped shut the instant the driver braked or lifted off the throttle. Because an open wing also reduced grip, drivers only ever used DRS where straight-line speed mattered more than cornering stability.

When could a driver use DRS?

DRS could not be deployed whenever a driver felt like it. Three conditions all had to be met:

  • Inside a DRS zone. Every circuit had one or more designated activation zones, almost always on straights.
  • Within one second of the car ahead. Just before each zone sat a “detection point.” If a chasing car crossed that point within one second of the car in front, the system armed and the driver could open DRS in the following zone.
  • Racing conditions declared safe. DRS stayed disabled for the first two laps of a race and after every restart, and race control switched it off in wet weather or when yellow flags were shown.

The one-second gap was the heart of the rule. It handed the trailing car a straight-line advantage to attack, while the leading car usually could not use the same tool to defend, because it was not itself within a second of anyone.

DRS zones and detection points

A track could have one, two, or even three DRS zones. Some shared a single detection point while others had their own. A smart defending driver’s best answer was to stay close through the corner before the detection point, break the one-second gap, and deny the attacker DRS in the next zone. That cat-and-mouse element made DRS a strategic weapon as much as a raw speed boost, and it often decided how a battle unfolded over several laps.

Why was DRS replaced for 2026?

Under the 2026 technical regulations DRS is gone. Cars now run active aerodynamics: movable front and rear wings that switch between a high-downforce “corner” mode and a low-drag “straight” mode, available to every driver at set points on the lap rather than only when chasing. To keep overtaking possible, F1 introduced Overtake Mode, a burst of extra electrical energy from the hybrid system that a driver can use when within one second of the car ahead. It is the same one-second principle DRS made famous, delivered as power from the MGU-K rather than as reduced drag.

How fans spotted DRS in action

DRS was easy to see on television. When a driver activated it, the rear-wing flap visibly flipped open, and on-screen graphics usually flashed “DRS” beside the chasing car’s name once it was within a second. Timing screens also showed the gap between cars at each detection point, so viewers could watch a pursuer close to within one second, arm the system, and then surge down the straight. Introduced in 2011, DRS quickly became one of the most recognizable features of a modern F1 broadcast, and its presence or absence often signaled whether a pass was about to happen.

Why DRS mattered

Before DRS, aerodynamic “dirty air” made it very hard for a following car to stay close enough to pass. DRS was F1’s answer: an artificial but reliable overtaking aid that produced far more on-track passing from 2011 onward.
