Every era produces a fresh wave of talent that redefines what’s possible in professional basketball. The players now coming into their prime suggest the next decade may be as exciting as any in NBA history. Here are the five young players who will shape the league’s future.

1. Victor Wembanyama, San Antonio Spurs

At 7’4″ with a 8’0″ wingspan, the ability to handle the ball like a guard and a shooting range extending to 35 feet, Wembanyama is literally unlike any basketball player that has ever lived. Now in his second season, he is averaging 26.8 points, 12.4 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 4.2 blocks per game. There are no historical comparisons that do him justice — he is creating his own template.

2. Chet Holmgren, Oklahoma City Thunder

Oklahoma City’s remarkable team-building has produced one of the most efficient young cores in the league, and Holmgren has emerged as its heart. His unique combination of perimeter shooting (42.3% from three), interior defense and ball-handling in transition makes him the perfect modern basketball player.

3. Jalen Green, Houston Rockets

Green’s explosion as a scorer — 28.4 per game this season — has validated Houston’s decision to rebuild around him. His ability to score from anywhere on the floor, combined with improving two-way play, makes him the kind of star who can carry a franchise.
